The MATRIX - Lighting you were not ment to see

Like my last post here are a few frames from the movie 'The Matrix', one of my favorites, and a few screen captures show the over head lighting used in the scene as well as the lighting for the final seconds of the movie.

As 'Morphius' tilts his head back we can see the ARRI 6K space light's (A.K.A. 'satellites') positioned behind the silk that was also flown above the set. This provides the very soft low lighting and creating the noticeable gradation in the fall off of the shadows. It almost appears that the tonal range is compressed. But if you examine the images you see that the tonality is full range and that the muted tones of the prop and set styling is what is creating the muted effect.

This is the final scene of the MATRIX

Looking in the reflection of the actors glasses you can see the HMI with Diffusion lighting set-up as well as the grip holding a large reflector camera left.
