How Codecs Work - Tutorial

by JamesNYCSeptember 2. 2014 09:32

If you work with video, it's vital to understand how codecs work and how they change your image. In this tutorial, I over all of the big concepts behind codecs, breaking it down into understandable pieces. While the nitty-gritty of compression algorithms can get complicated, all of the main ideas are quite simple.

Here's an overview of the topics covered:

- What a codec is - And how it differs from a container.
- Different types of codecs - And why I frequently use 4 different codecs on a single project.
- Bit Depth - What it means and why it matters.
- Chroma Subsampling - 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0, and when it becomes an issue.
- Spatial Compression and Blocking - One of the most common artefacts you see with normal work.
- Temporal Compression - Long-GOP codecs, inter-frame compression, and ALL-I codecs.
- Lossless vs. Lossy compression - How image compression differs from data compression.
- Bit Rate - How to calculate bit rates and the differences between kbps/kBps/Mbps/MBps.
- Raw - Briefly, the difference between Raw, compressed, and uncompressed video.

Bentley Commercial Shot and Edited with iPhone and iPad

by JamesNYCMay 22. 2014 10:27

Intelligent Details, a short documentary film commissioned by Bentley Motors, introduces Luc Donckerwolke, Director of Design, and SangYup Lee, Head of Exterior Design. Filmed in the Bentley Mulsanne in New York, Intelligent Details focuses on what inspires Luc and SangYup in their roles as design leaders for Bentley Motors. The film highlights the fusion of luxury, performance and technology within the Bentley Mulsanne and reveals the manner in which Intelligent Details was filmed, assembled and edited using the in-car connectivity and entertainment platform.

The new luxury Bentley Mulsane comes with two iPad Airs installed behind the front seats. Further solidifying the link between Apple and Bentley, the car company filmed a 5-minute commercial with the iPhone 5s, and edited it with iMovie on the iPads that are in the back of the car.
"I think it is all about mixing the best products and the best designs together," says the head of design for Bentley.

End of the year photo equipment sales, getting the best price.

by JamesNYCDecember 17. 2013 02:50

End of the year photo equipment sales, …getting the best price.

There is a little known fact when it comes to retail sales in the photo industry.
It primarily applies to more big-ticket items ($500.00 and above) that are targeted towards commercial advertising photographers, equipment rental houses, photo studios, photo assistants and digital techs; but specialty photo retailers will take the money of the average photo enthusiast too… “Because hey, green is green”.

The MATRIX - Lighting you were not ment to see

by JamesNYCDecember 3. 2013 03:15

Like my last post here are a few frames from the movie 'The Matrix', one of my favorites, and a few screen captures show the over head lighting used in the scene as well as the lighting for the final seconds of the movie.

As 'Morphius' tilts his head back we can see the ARRI 6K space light's (A.K.A. 'satellites') positioned behind the silk that was also flown above the set. This provides the very soft low lighting and creating the noticeable gradation in the fall off of the shadows. It almost appears that the tonal range is compressed. But if you examine the images you see that the tonality is full range and that the muted tones of the prop and set styling is what is creating the muted effect.
