by JamesNYCDecember 17. 2013 02:50

End of the year photo equipment sales, …getting the best price.

There is a little known fact when it comes to retail sales in the photo industry.
It primarily applies to more big-ticket items ($500.00 and above) that are targeted towards commercial advertising photographers, equipment rental houses, photo studios, photo assistants and digital techs; but specialty photo retailers will take the money of the average photo enthusiast too… “Because hey, green is green”.

The MATRIX - Lighting you were not ment to see

by JamesNYCDecember 3. 2013 03:15

Like my last post here are a few frames from the movie 'The Matrix', one of my favorites, and a few screen captures show the over head lighting used in the scene as well as the lighting for the final seconds of the movie.

As 'Morphius' tilts his head back we can see the ARRI 6K space light's (A.K.A. 'satellites') positioned behind the silk that was also flown above the set. This provides the very soft low lighting and creating the noticeable gradation in the fall off of the shadows. It almost appears that the tonal range is compressed. But if you examine the images you see that the tonality is full range and that the muted tones of the prop and set styling is what is creating the muted effect.

Leica announces their new wide-angle lenses Leica Elmarit-S 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH. and the Central Shutter Version (CS).

by JamesNYCOctober 6. 2013 04:02

LEICA ELMARIT-S 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH.

Natural perspective at the highest level

The angle of view corresponds to that of the classic 35 mm focal length for 35 mm photography and, with its moderate wide-angle and true-to-life perspectives, make it outstanding for landscapes and architectural photography as well as for studio work. Its high speed of f/2.8 makes it optimal for available light photography and the judicious use of selective focus.

The lens portfolio for the Leica S medium format system now comprises nine Leica S lenses (six with CS variants) with focal lengths from 24 mm - 180 mm.

by JamesNYCOctober 4. 2013 18:25

October Promotion – Take advantage of this 20% off  hot deal on one of the most useful clamps in Kupo’s grip arsenal, the 9″ Super Viser Clamp (KG600212)

Fashioned after the famous Cardellini Clamp, the Super Viser is an extremely strong and versatile clamp. It can mount securely onto round and square objects, or just about an

y unique shape up to 8″ in diameter. The jaw position remains fixed on one side of the clamp, enabling it to be mounted where limited space is available. The specially formulated grip pad provides a strong grip, yet protects the surface it’s clamped around. Besides the built-in baby pin, another Kupo innovation outfits this clamp with a hexagonal receiver that accepts the full compliment of Convi Clamp accessories. Another advantage of this clamp is has a chamfered slot running down the back of the main bolt. GoPro Gets Smaller, Lighter with Hero3 Plus

by JamesNYCOctober 3. 2013 23:25

Newest Version of Popular Crash Cam Has Improved Lens, Audio Recording.

GoPro has updated its popular Hero3 action cam with the smaller and lighter Hero3+, making it an even more attractive no-budget crash cam for filmmakers. In a recent press release, the company claims that, on a unit basis, more Hero3s have been sold to "professional production companies" than any other camera.

GoPro says the Hero3+ Black Edition is 20 percent smaller and lighter than the previous model, and comes with a 30 percent increase in battery life. The lens has been improved for what GoPro says is a 33 percent increase in sharpness along with a "2x reduction" of artifacts in the image.

Audio is upgraded, too, with the new Hero3+ Black incorporating more sensitive audio recording along with a new wind-noise reduction system. Wi-Fi connectivity to smartphones or tablets for remote-control applications has been increased by four times, the company said, and the included Wi-Fi Remote lets users control up to 50 cameras from up to 600 feet away.

A new "Auto Low Light Mode" is said to improve low-light performance by changing frame rates based on lighting conditions. Judging from specs posted at GoPro's website, the camera essentially halves its shooting speed in low-light environments. For example, if your camera is strapped to a bike cruising down the highway on a sunny day, you'll be able to shoot 1440p video at 48fps. If that bike enters a dark tunnel, your frame rate will automatically drop to 24fps.

Did that reference to "1440p" throw you? The 1920×1440 recording format, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, is just one of many video modes on the Hero3+ Black, from full Ultra HD/4K video (up to 4096×2160) at 12p on the high end to WVGA (848×480) at 240p on the low end. There are plenty of options in between, including two 2.7K options and, of course, 1080p and 720p. And the new SuperView mode enables recording of wider-angle 1080p and 720p footage than was available in the previous version of the camera.

“We have used GoPro cameras in some of our biggest productions, like Survivor and The Bible," said producer Mark Burnett in a prepared statement. "GoPro has allowed us to capture and share fascinating new perspectives that previously weren’t possible or were too costly, which in the end makes for better storytelling."

The Hero3+ Black Edition has a suggested list price of $399.99.

Zacuto USA - Z-Drive and Tornado

by JamesNYCOctober 3. 2013 11:53

The Z-Drive and Tornado are finally here! In 2011, Zacuto product designers set out to create a new device: a mechanical follow focus handgrip for shoulder mounted camera rigs. The first prototype was announced at NAB 2012 and was then overhauled into the sleeker more streamlined model that debuted at NAB 2013. After more than two years of Z-blood, Z-sweat and Z-tears, we are finally ready to announce the release of these amazing new products.

The Z-Drive is a unique direct drive universal follow focus that can be used in an infinite number of positions. It can be used on the operator side in a frontal downward position for shoulder mounted use. It can be used in a angled backward position for use with a whip if you are standing behind the tripod or dolly. It can be used at any angle up, down or in between on the operator or assistant side.

Adobe Admits to Being Hacked, 2.9M User Accounts Compromised

by JamesNYCOctober 3. 2013 02:54

Adobe users who have purchased a product or signed up for Creative Cloud recently beware. According to Adobe’s website, the company’s servers were hacked “very recently,” and the attackers made away with customer information from 2.9 million Adobe accounts, as well as source code for a few Adobe products.

Adobe isn’t disclosing when exactly this happened, but the company is admitting that the hackers managed to pull “customer IDs, encrypted passwords… names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and other information relating to customer orders” from some 2.9 million users’ accounts — Adobe is in the process of notifying affected customers by email.

The good news (if you can call it that) is that Adobe doesn’t believe the hackers got any decrypted financial information, so even though we suggest Adobe CC subscribers keep a closer eye on their bank and CC accounts over the next few weeks, you should be ok.

Regardless, Adobe still isn’t willing to take any chances where customer info is concerned. In addition to working with financial institutions to protect customers’ accounts, the company is also resetting all Adobe ID passwords affected.

Those whose financial info was compromised will also receive a letter detailing steps they might take to help protect themselves, as well as one year of free credit monitoring so you can be sure nothing fishy is going on.

The source code breach, which Adobe believes might have been related, has less to do with us photographic types. Apparently the cyber thieves stole source code from “Acrobat, ColdFusion, ColdFusion Builder and other Adobe products.”

Thankfully, this particular breach requires no further action as Adobe “[is] not aware of any specific increased risk to customers as a result of this incident.” We’ll call that the silver lining.

For more info on either security breach, head over to the Adobe blog by clicking here (customer info theft) or here (source code theft). As we mentioned above, if you were affected by the hack, you should shortly (if you haven’t already) receive an e-mail from Adobe notifying you.
