Samsung 850 Pro 3D NAND and RAM caching result in the fastest, most durable SSD money can buy

by JamesNYCSeptember 3. 2014 06:16

In the world of SSDs, the Samsung 850 Pro is a major achievement. Up until now, all of the advances in SSD technology have come from either shrinking the size of the memory cells through using smaller process nodes, or through packing more data into each cell. For years, that approach won us ever-falling prices and improved performance, but it came with a built-in timer — at each successively smaller process node, it became more and more difficult for manufacturers to ensure NAND would retain its speed and reliability for years.

The alternative to this approach is to adopt 3D NAND, also called V-NAND (Vertical NAND), and stand the entire die stack on its head. The 850 Pro is the first SSD to deploy this method. Samsung has worked on the technology for years. We’ve discussed 3D NAND multiple times before — the basic idea is that by standing the NAND stack on its head and working downwards, it’s possible to build a NAND structure that holds a great deal more data per square millimeter — or at least, that’s the eventual goal.

Crowdfunding Project - 13 Questions Around Jazz

by JamesNYCSeptember 1. 2014 06:26

13 Questions Around Jazz

A series of intimate and exclusive portraits of Jazz artists in New York City and vicinities

Hi! It's the one talking in the video! I'm responsible for this whole endeavour.

I'm very excited to be here, to present this project to you: A series of private images, and a special glimpse into the jazz world.

My subjects were gracious enough to invite me into their world. Now let me invite you in – to their homes, where they work, places which are part of what constitute the actual fabric of Jazz and keep it alive. Along with my images there are interviews with all the subjects: each is asked the same 13 questions about music and life in general. The book comes with a musical CD of compositions by some of the artists photographed. It's a great book, and it looks great! These are moment between moments, in the flow of the music that never stops, in the city that never sleeps. These special images and words I believe deserve an appropriate format: when closed it's the size of a vinyl record cover (about 12.5x11 inches / cm 32.5x27.5), with a hard cover and a dust jacket. When published, this book will be distributed in book stores, music clubs/restaurants and other public venues and will not only become a great vehicle of promotion, but will in turn allow me to give back to all the artists and subjects of my project for participating to it: I believe this book and CD will help to stimulate curiosity and attract interest toward Jazz AND toward its exponents, which is the real bottom line.

We must raise $22,000 to print a minimum of 500 copies (they don't do less), plus somewhere between $500 and 1,000 to print the music CDs and sleeve them, and a small amount to cover shipping costs, plus hopefully some extras: to pay a couple of friends who helped me and didn't ask any money upfront. Therefore I'm setting the goal to $25,000.

Color as a Storytelling Device

by JamesNYCJuly 29. 2014 09:56

On his blog, Robert Mills examines the use of color in films as a storytelling device, using examples from Oz the Great and Powerful, Memento, Beauty and the Beast, and more.

He writes, "Color can have political, religious and cultural connotations, represent gender and as believed by Kandisnky, have emotional and physical effects on us. Color can also improve our memory, influence buying decisions, indicate meaning and tell stories. It’s that very last one that interests me most. In this post I want to focus on the use of color as a storytelling device in films."

Sigma introduces the dp2 Quattro

by JamesNYCFebruary 13. 2014 02:52

On first impression the Sigma dp2 Quattro is not a typical compact camera. It has a slender body, with a prominant fixed lens and an unusual diagonal grip. It's design is not the only thing that makes this camera unique. it also features the latest incarnation of Sigma's Foveon X3 direct image sensor, which uses vertical color separation technology.

The dp2 Quattro is the first in Sigma's new line of fixed focal length cameras which prioritize image quality. A trio of dp Quattro compacts will feature either a wide-angle, standard, or medium telephoto lens. The dp2 will be the first to be released and is the standard focal length offering, with its 30-mm lens giving a 35-mm-format equivalent of 45-mm.

WORKSHOP I – WET PLATE COLLODION 101

WORKSHOP I – WET PLATE COLLODION 101

3 Days of  instruction by James Weber.

Class Dates Available:

September 27th - 29th August, 2013.

Wet Plate Collodion photography is the second historical photographic process, and is one of the last remaining photographic arts where everything is a hand crafted chemical/darkroom process.  In the class, we'll be making tintypes(on aluminum) and Ambrotypes(on glass).  In an age where everything has gone digital, it's nice to get back in the darkroom.

Day 1, Sept. 27th:  We'll cover a little history of wet plate, converting cameras, making chemistry, learning how to flow the plate with collodion,  and practice shooting/developing/fixing/washing.  Basically, we cover all the skills you need to get started doing this yourself.

Day 2, Sept. 28th:  With the introduction of the skills you need covered in day 1, day 2 is more shooting, plus we'll cover the various studio lighting options that are available to you, their benefits and difficulties laid out.

Day 3, Sept 29th:  On Day 3, the class takes a trip in James' RV, where we'll go on location to work on daylight shooting.  For those students that bought the three day package, they get to shoot one mammoth plate, 20x24.

Adobe rethinks their Suscription model specific to Photographers

by JamesNYCSeptember 6. 2013 04:02

Introducing the Photoshop Photography Program

The Photoshop Photography Program will be available during the week of September 16, 2013

During today's keynote at the Photoshop World conference in Las Vegas, Adobe is showcasing how photography workflows will evolve to take advantage of an increasingly connected world. This includes a tour of how easy it is today to use Creative Cloud to make your content and creations available anywhere, plus the power of Behance to showcase work. We also highlight some of the exciting new technologies that we're working on for Photoshop CC and Lightroom; our roadmap for making our photography products even more connected; and a peek at how we're planning to bring advanced Adobe digital imaging technology to mobile devices. You'll see these products and services become available in the not too distant future.

Throughout this week at Photoshop World, we're demoing some great digital imaging innovation and I hope you're as excited as we are about what's available today and what's coming soon, thanks to our talented teams of engineers.

Since introducing Photoshop CC, we've listened to feedback from a spectrum of our customers, from advanced professionals to casual enthusiasts. One common request was a solution specifically tailored for photographers. We listened, and at Photoshop World we’re announcing a special offer for our loyal Photoshop customers. Beginning today, customers who own Photoshop CS3 or higher are eligible for a special Creative Cloud membership offer that includes all of the following for just $9.99/month:

  • Photoshop CC
  • Lightroom 5
  • 20 GB of online storage
  • Behance ProSite
  • Access to Creative Cloud Learn’s training resources
  • Ongoing upgrades and updates

To be clear, $9.99 is not an introductory price. It is the price for those of you who sign up by December 31, 2013. And here is a list of prices for the major regions outside of the US – keep in mind that these prices are exclusive of VAT/local taxes which vary by country.

This offer will be available the week of September 16th at the same time we introduce the new version of Lightroom 5.2.  Visit the FAQ to learn more.

Beware Facebook's New Terms of Service

by JamesNYCSeptember 5. 2013 13:05

ASMP just sent a mass email to all subscribers alerting all of us to Facebooks new terms of service.

Facebook has just claimed the right to use or sell your identity, your content and your data without limit. They have nuked their own privacy policy, removing the right for you to keep anything private.

Download FB TOS as of Sept 05 2013

Proposed Updates to our Governing Documents

Facebook has asked for comments. They can be posted here.

Here is a link to information posted by ASMP

Here’s the most important language (strikethrough indicates language that is being removed. Bold text is used to indicate the new additions).

You can use your privacy settings to limit how your name and profile picture may be associated with commercial, sponsored, or related content (such as a brand you like) served or enhanced by us. You give us permission to use your name, and profile picture, content, and information in connection with commercial, sponsored, or related that content (such as a brand you like) served or enhanced by us, subject to the limits you place. This means, for example, that you permit a business or other entity to pay us to display your name and/or profile picture with your content or information, without any compensation to you. If you have selected a specific audience for your content or information, we will respect your choice when we use it.

The Section-by-Section Summary of Updates takes pains to claim that Facebook has the right to collect and make use of data that it finds “when you are using Fcebook or when Facebook is running.” This probably gives Facebook a license to collect, use, share and sell most of your web browsing (unless you are running software to block cookies) and much of what your mobile phone is gathering, such as your location, phone calls, etc.

They are already collecting a lot of this information. The screenshot below is from my Facebook feed a few hours after I did a search for a hotel in Reston on a totally unrelated site. Facebook is already collecting, using and selling this kind of information. They are now asking for irrevokable permission to continue, and to add your photos to the mix.

As with the Instagram Terms of Use, I believe that Facebook is asking for open-ended permission here that does not serve the needs of users. This is an overly broad agreement that shifts the control over a person or company’s content and identity too far into the hands of Facebook.
