Elephant Steady camera stabilizer uses iPhone gyro to stay on the level

by JamesNYCJuly 16. 2014 02:12

This is a Kickstarter campaign we like.

One of the neat things about smartphones is the fact that when gadgets are designed to be used with them, those devices can make use of the phone's sensors and other electronics instead of incorporating their own.

This, of course, means that those devices can thus be smaller and cheaper than would otherwise be possible. The Elephant Steady is a new motorized iPhone camera-stabilizing rig, that takes this approach.

DaVinci Resolve 11 and Resolve 11 Lite Rleased by BlackMagic today

by JamesNYCJune 27. 2014 02:55

BlackMagic’s DaVinci Resolve has for along time been the industry leader in color grading software for movie industry professionals. When the company released the free version of Resolve lite several years ago movie makers around the country began to take notice, and began using it on independent or  low-budget projects; from music videos to feature documentaries.

What’s New

The release of DaVinci Resolve 11 beta, now delivers a full featured non-linear editing system (NLE) to manage everything from media management through editing and grading through finishing, all in one powerful, high-end system.

Editing in Resolve 11

For those movie makers whose NLE loyalty remains with Adobe Premiere Pro or Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, Resolve 11 brings improved round trip collaboration features. These allow indie directors cutting their movies in PPro and FCP X to easily move their edit to a post-production company for final color grading and finishing. Perfect when independent documentaries and features find backing for mainstream release.

BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve 11 Enhancements

Resolve 11′s improved collaboration workflow tools enable editors and colorists to work on different workstations simultaneously while sharing the same timeline. This allows feature film and television creative teams to work faster and in sync.

BlackMagic has also improved DaVinci Resolve 11′s color correction tools. Its new color grading and RAW image controls will be especially welcomed by stills photographers who are in the process of becoming digital cinematographers and directors.

This new version includes controls already familiar to RAW photo processing software users - highlight and shadow recovery, mid-tone detail enhancement, color boost, saturation, lift, gain and contrast. Some hybrid stills/video photographers have reportedly been using Resolve Lite for stills images. This new version should tempt many more to do that and apply it to their video footage too.

DaVinci Resolve 11 has now also become an on-set asset management tool through secure backup and saving of your digital camera files via its new clone tool. The tool copies memory cards, media drives and camera packs to multiple back up drives at the same time. Clone backups can be done with DaVinci Resolve Lite 11 on your Mac Book Pro or Windows laptop or through DaVinci Resolve 11 full version in your video village.

These enhancements are just the tip of the iceberg. For more information go to the BlackMagic Design DaVinci Resolve pages. If you are new to DaVinci Resolve, it's a good idea to get a feel for things by trying out the full version by downloading DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite.

Living Moments – Lumia Arc of Wonder Nokia and Microsoft Collaborate on Photographic First & Bullet Effect with 50 Smart Phones

by JamesNYCMay 24. 2014 15:05

The Nokia cell phone is not a video camera, but this video by Paul Trillo caught our attention.
Unfortunately it may cause some people motion sickness watching it.
Arc of Wonder: Bullet- Effect Photoshoot with 50 Lumias It was transported through the bustling streets of New York to capture “Living Moments” using the powerful 41-megapixel camera on the Lumia 1020.

It’s another first for Lumia, connecting 50 smartphones and enabling a “bullet-effect” photoshoot pushes the boundaries of photography and technology. Pioneering filmmaker Paul Trillo, said: “We used a Microsoft Surface tablet to control the shoot and a special app which was designed for the Windows 8 mobile platform.“We captured a total of 30,000 images across Manhattan, including Union Square, Allen St. and Central Park West.”“The Multi Lumia Arc of Wonder combines smart technology to demonstrate the power of Lumia imaging, and the results are stunning” said Costas Syrmos, head of the creative lab.

The film was compiled from the still images shot with 50 Nokia Lumia devices.

Microsoft and renowned filmmaker Paul Trillo joined forces to create a smartphone system that allows users to control multiple Nokia Lumia 1020 devices both wirelessly and simultaneously. Designed for the Windows 8 mobile platform, the “bullet effect” is a technical first on a mobile device, offering 100% mobility.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Living Moments – Lumia Arc of Wonder’

After connecting 50 Nokia Lumia devices, a separate, designated Surface tablet was used as a remote control, creating the “Lumia Arc of Wonder”.

The result reveals the phones’ incredible capabilities for striking, vivid imagery, whilst pushing the boundaries of photography and technology.

Zoom Releases All New H5 Handy Recorder

by JamesNYCMay 23. 2014 21:21

Zoom has released the new Zoom H5 Handy Recorder; a sequel to the H4n that was embraced by many in the DSLR video world.

The new H5 now includes a brighter LCD screen than the H6 which was previously released.

Louder. Closer. Cleaner.

X/Y recording allows you to cover a wide area yet still capture sound sources in the center with clarity and definition, making it ideal for all types of live stereo recording. The XYH-5 X/Y microphone capsule included with the H5 provides two matched unidirectional condenser microphones set at a 90 degree angle. These are housed within an advanced shockmount that employs rugged external mic wires and rubberized material to isolate the unit from the H5 body and thus minimize vibration and handling noise. The design of the XYH-5 also allows the H5 to handle louder sounds than any other Handy Recorder model: 140 dB SPL, to be precise—equivalent to the sound of a jet aircraft from less than 200 feet away—enabling you to capture sounds louder, closer, and cleaner than you ever could before.

6 minute video spot shot om 35mm film

by JamesNYCFebruary 8. 2014 03:16

Parfumerie Guerlain splashed out the big bucks for this nearly six-minute spot shot on 35mm film on location in India. (NSFW: NUDITY) Directed by Bruno Aveillan, it takes epic creative license with the story of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and the creation of the Taj Mahal, which was built for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. No idea why an actress of Persian descent couldn't be summoned for the role, rather than Russian model Natalia Vodianova, but that's fashion for you.

Canon C500 Slow Motion video Test - By: Magnanimous Media

by JamesNYCJune 28. 2013 03:05

Our friends Magnanimous Media in my home town of Chicago have posted to great series of videos: Canon C500 Slow Motion Test.

A few months ago we teamed up with fashion photographer Billy Rood to shoot a slow-motion test with the Canon C500. Billy was planning a beauty shoot for his magazine Fifty8, so we joined forces and pulled together this little test. Canon USA graciously loaned us one Convergent Designs Gemini 444 Recorder, we also utilized the one we have in-house. With these two devices we were able to activate the 120 fps functionally of the Canon EOS C500. The results are these beautiful videos.

Palladium from Magnanimous Media on Vimeo.

Palladium was captured to two Gemini 444 recorders at 120fps in 4K Half Raw (RMF) 4096×1080 in a 59.94p timebase. The 4K Half Raw was then transcoded to 4K DPX 10-bit in Canon Raw Development software, which debayered it to 4096×2160 in a 59.94p timebase. Pomfort DPX Header Editor was used to edit the DPX file header to a 23.976p timebase. Proxies were then generated from Da Vinci Resolve for an offline edit. The footage was conformed in Da Vinci Resolve for final color and delivery.
