Leica Launchs the New Leica T-System

by JamesNYCApril 24. 2014 01:44

Los Angeles, California - April 24th, 2014 -- Leica Camera continues to celebrate its journey into the future with the launch of the radically new yet brilliantly familiar Leica T-System. The Leica-T was designed with dynamic simplicity in collaboration with AUDI Design and it is the fourth system ever to be released from Leica. The Leica T-System features Wi-Fi, a rebuilt graphical user interface (GUI), Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®, a professional digital workflow solution for Apple Mac® OS X and Microsoft Windows®.

Leica has been praised for a century for its precise engineering while understanding the importance of design. As a result, Leica has created tools that are the perfect balance of purpose and emotion. At the heart of this praise is the collaboration with AUDI design and the creation of the Leica T-Unibody. The Unibody was painstakingly made by hand and machined from a single, solid block of aluminum, with a sleek and tactile finish. The new body is a natural extension of the user’s hand and photographic vision allowing complete focus on crafting the perfect image. Using the integrated Wi-Fi module these images can be wirelessly transmitted to smartphones, tablets, and various social media platforms via the new Leica-T app which is available for iOS devices. Leica customers can also download image processing software, Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®, free after registering their camera on the Leica website. The digital image processing software offers a comprehensive range of functions for the management, processing, and presentation of pictures and video. Leica has also collaborated with AUDI Design to create new and unique accessories. These accessories include bags and cases available in yellow, orange-red, black and white. The bags, cases, and straps were designed using the new, innovative Easy-Click system. Easy-Click was designed to effortlessly connect the user’s straps to their bags and cases. Two new lenses are being introduced that will accompany the Leica T-System launch: the Leica Vario-Elmar-T 18-56 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH and the Leica Summicron-T 23 mm f/2 ASPH. The Leica Vario-Elmar is ideal for creative innovators who want true versatility in their photography allowing them to seamlessly shoot landscapes, portraits, and other limitless forms of creative outlets. The Leica Summicron-T 23 mmf/2 ASPH which equates to the traditional reportage focal length of 50mm gives the user everything they need to capture all the decisive moments. The Leica M-Adapter T expands the lens selections to include all Leica M-Lenses produced after 1954.

The Leica T features a large high performance, APS-C-format CMOS image sensor with over 16.5 megapixels (effective 16.2 MP) that is the perfect combination of performance and image quality. The MyCamera menu can be customized to the user’s preferences allowing easier access to all their frequently used settings. The system also includes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder with an integrated GPS feature and tilt and swivel function allowing angles to be adjusted. The new Leica SF 26 flash unit gives users the ability for perfect flash exposures and fill light. Unique to the Leica SF 26 flash allows it to be used as an LED light source for recording video.

The Leica T-System will be available to order starting Monday, May 26th through Leica Stores, Leica Boutiques, and select Leica Dealers.

The Profoto B1 Can Now Perform TTL Metering with Canon EOS-1D X

by JamesNYCMarch 31. 2014 05:11

Profoto Announces B1 Firmware Upgrade

Today, Profoto followed through on its promise to continuously update and improve their B1 wireless, off-camera flash system,  by announcing their first B1 firmware upgrade and update to the AirTTL system,  enabling TTL metering with the Canon EOS-1D X.

Since its release in November last year, the B1 has been able to perform TTL metering with the majority of Canon cameras. But there was one exception – Canon’s flagship – the EOS-1D X. Today, this feature is made available free of charge through an easily installed firmware upgrade.

The TTL metering is made possible with Profoto’s patent-pending AirTTL system.  At launch Profoto promised to continuously update the AirTTL system and , according to Profoto, one of the most frequently requested features is TTL metering with Canon’s flagship model: the Canon EOS-1D X. The upgrade is available free of charge through an easily installed through a USB port on the the AirTTL-C  and not the B1 off-camera flash itself.

This is the first of many planned upgrades for the B1 off-camera flash and the AirTTL system. Profoto is currently working on a firmware upgrade for high-speed sync (HSS). Profoto is also busy developing the new Air Remote TTL-N that will enable TTL metering with Nikon cameras. Both the HSS upgrade and the Air Remote TTL-N are expected to be released in 2014.

How To Install Your B1 Firmware Upgrade -

  1. Go to www.profoto.com/support.
  2. Sign in with an existing My Profoto account or create a new one. If you create a new one, you’ll have to click the activation link in the email we send you after creating your account.
  3. Once you’ve logged in to My Profoto, register your B1 and your Air Remote TTL-C. Having your product registered is also a great help if your product is lost or stolen!
  4. Once your products are registered, click “Upgrade Product”.
  5. Choose the Air Remote TTL-C and enter its serial number, which can be found in the remote’s battery compartment. This is necessary to verify that your specific remote is compatible with this particular upgrade.
  6. The download buttons will be activated as soon as a correct serial number has been provided. When they’re active, click either “Download Upgrade for MAC” or “Download Upgrade for PC”.
  7. Open the downloaded software and follow the simple instructions.

Anyone can create a My Profoto account and register whatever Profoto products they have. As mentioned before, it can be a great help if a product is lost or stolen. But the only firmware upgrade available at the moment is the one for the AirRemote TTL-C.

Profoto B1 firmware upgrades are easy to install with the AirTTL’s built-in USB port. Just download the update, connect the AirTTL to your computer and follow the instructions.

This is definitely a welcome upgrade and more news of a high-speed sync (HSS) update coming soon is music to our ears.  However, Nikon users are scratching their heads and wondering why Profoto chose to update the B1 for use with Canon’s pricey flagship camera system when Nikon users are yet to tap in to the power and portability of these “game changing” lights on any level.  The Nikon update can’t be far behind but we’re still to get a solid release date on the Air Remote TTL-N and possible firmware update to match . Soon we hope…. wedding season is coming!

Flying a Drone around The NY Public Library

by JamesNYCOctober 31. 2013 01:01

Originally posted on http://boltron.com/nypl

Shot with the full cooperation of nypl.org and their rad labs team. Seems like most likely the first drone ever flown inside the NY Public Library. If you haven’t been there, go.

Everyone in the video was involved in the shoot and lots of safety precautions were taken and no books were harmed in the making of this video. Shot with a DJI Phantom and both a Hero3 Black and an iPhone 5S. Slowed down with Twixtor in After Effects to make up for the glaring lack of a Gimbal.

Thanks to @msh for coming up with the idea, @riordan for touring us, and @meikd, @ryanchris, and @gab for helping out. So much semi-autonomous quadcopter technology happening right now. Pretty sweet that they are small enough to take into a place like this and open up a new way of capturing images. And this is just the beginning. Music was purchased with rights to distribute from the Vimeo music store.

New Law Regulates the Use of Child Models in New York

by JamesNYCOctober 26. 2013 15:23

New legislation in New York State demands that models under the age of 18 receive the same protection as child performers. Photographers and clients who hire models under the age of 18 will have to provide them with more protections and services on shoots in New York State under a new law that takes effect November 20. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the new child labor law on Monday night.

State senators Jeffrey D. Klein and Diane Savino, Democrats from New York City, proposed the legislation earlier this summer.

Lawyers writing for The National Law Review broke down the implications of the legislation in an article published in July. According to the article, “the new legislation will provide that companies employing models under the age of 18 will be required to obtain certificates of eligibility, to provide chaperones and tutors and to limit their work hours,” among other requirements. Under-age models will now receive the same protections as child performers.

The law also stipulates that 15 percent of a child model’s gross income be placed in a trust by the model’s employer.

Advocacy organization The Model Alliance, which supported the legislation, created a guide to understanding the new law, “Under 18 Models and the Law,” which can be downloaded here: http://modelalliance.org/child-models
